Head-high, the briars tower beneath
viper-fanged trees of terror.
Wind whips
barbed branches
like weapons,
rending clothes and
ripping tender flesh
from clattering bone.
Straitjackets of thorns
hinder escape
until panic tears
men to pieces—
keeping the rooks
well-fed.
